The Ministry of Oil and the General Company for Carbon Economics Discuss Registering Gas Investment Projects as Mitigation Projects and Moving Towards Producing Low-Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF)

In implementation of the directives of the Prime Minister, Dr. Izzat Saber Ismail, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Gas Affairs, held a meeting with Mr. Haider Qasim Al-Darraji, Director General of the General Company for Carbon Economics, to discuss mechanisms for registering associated gas investment projects as greenhouse gas emission mitigation projects. This is in line with international carbon market standards and enhances Iraq's efforts in reducing emissions and achieving sustainable development goals.
The meeting included discussions on the technical and regulatory steps required to document gas investment projects and meet the requirements of Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems, allowing for the calculation of achieved emission reductions and their potential registration within carbon credit programs. This contributes to maximizing the economic value of gas investment projects and reducing gas flaring.
The two sides also talked about ways to work together on developing low-carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) projects by using national gas resources and applying technologies that lower the carbon intensity of aviation fuel. This aligns with international trends in civil aviation and boosts the competitiveness of Iraqi products worldwide. They both stressed the importance of teaming up to speed up priority projects, which would help make the most of gas investment, cut emissions, and move towards a low-carbon economy.
